Gibellina. Un territorio che non smette mai di raccontare è stato realizzato nel 2025 durante la residenza fotografica promossa da PHOS Centro Fotografia Torino in Sicilia occidentale, sotto la direzione di Enzo Obiso. Il progetto concentra lo sguardo sul Grande Cretto di Alberto Burri, l’opera ambientale che ricopre le rovine di Gibellina Vecchia, distrutta dal terremoto della Valle del Belìce nel gennaio del 1968.

Concepito da Burri come un vasto sudario di cemento bianco, il Cretto conserva sotto i suoi blocchi le macerie dell’abitato. Le fenditure seguono le tracce delle antiche strade e trasformano la pianta della città in un percorso fisico: un luogo nel quale memoria, paesaggio e corpo continuano a misurarsi.

Nelle fotografie di Fabio Oggero la scala monumentale dell’opera lascia spazio a un’esperienza ravvicinata. I muri diventano superfici sensibili, segnate dal tempo e dalla materia; le curve e gli attraversamenti guidano lo sguardo, mentre il contrasto del bianco e nero mette in tensione il cemento, la profondità delle ombre e il movimento del cielo. L’assenza della figura umana rafforza la percezione di un’architettura sospesa, insieme concreta e mentale.

La sequenza osserva il Grande Cretto come una forma ancora viva, capace di custodire ciò che non è più visibile e di restituirlo attraverso l’esperienza del cammino. La fotografia si colloca così tra documento e astrazione, facendo emergere nel monumento una geografia della perdita, della persistenza e della trasformazione.

Gibellina. A territory that never ceases to tell its story was created in 2025 during the photographic residency organised by PHOS Centro Fotografia Torino in western Sicily, under the direction of Enzo Obiso. The project focuses on Alberto Burri’s Grande Cretto, the environmental artwork that covers the ruins of Gibellina Vecchia, destroyed by the earthquake that struck the Belìce Valley in January 1968.

Conceived by Burri as an immense shroud of white concrete, the Cretto preserves the remains of the town beneath its blocks. Its fissures follow the traces of the former streets, transforming the urban plan into a physical path: a place where memory, landscape and the body continue to measure themselves against one another.

In Fabio Oggero’s photographs, the monumental scale of the work gives way to an intimate experience. The walls become sensitive surfaces, marked by time and matter; curves and passages guide the gaze, while the contrast of black and white creates a tension between concrete, deep shadow and the movement of the sky. The absence of the human figure heightens the perception of an architecture held in suspension, at once physical and mental.

The sequence approaches the Grande Cretto as a living form, capable of holding what can no longer be seen and returning it through the experience of walking. Photography occupies the space between document and abstraction, revealing within the monument a geography of loss, persistence and transformation.
